Building Confidence & Self-Esteem

As soon as their self esteem is great, they can excel at other things throughout their life, everything they do will be affected by their self esteem: education, work, sports” - Leeanne Swan, apprentice

Language revival is supporting Pertame children to build strong identities to increase self-esteem and cultural pride

  • Performing in Language

Our Pertame children have been showcasing their language skills through public performances, growing their pride in language, confidence and public speaking skills. They have performed a series of Pertame songs at the Alice Springs Beanie Festival and their school assembly in language.

  • Teaching their Peers

  • Presenting Their Pertame Creative Writing

Pertame children created their own bilingual superhero stories that they have written, illustrated, narrated and in some cases, edited themselves, and premiered in front of the entire Pertame community during a community event. Their stories won the Young Territory Author of the Year award for Best School Entry.

Pertame Choir Performance at Uncle Archie Roach State Memorial Service in Melbourne at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl

“As a Pertame Elder, I’m so proud this is happening while us Elders are still around. Our children have benefited so much from this great experience traveling to Melbourne. We are remembering the legacy of Mr Roach and the powerful First Nations stories he told through music and song. The children shined performing the song "Took the Children Away" in Pertame. This experience is showing them that they can go a long way with their language. It’s encouraging them to be more confident in who they are as Pertame people. - Kathleen Bradshaw-Swan, Pertame Elder

"They know that they are Pertame Ketyeye mapa (Pertame kids). By teaching them Pertame and getting them to speak and perform in front of people, it’s building their confidence. So they can be proud of who they are and their language”

— Shania Armstrong, Pertame Apprentice

"Most of the kids were shy when we started last year. Now that they have had regular weekly lessons throughout the whole year, they have become more confident"
